Fertility preservation, also known as fertility cryopreservation or gamete cryopreservation, refers to the process of preserving reproductive cells (sperm or eggs) or reproductive tissue (ovarian or testicular tissue) for future use. The primary goal of fertility preservation is to safeguard an individual’s fertility potential so that they can have biological children at a later time when they are ready or when medical conditions or treatments may threaten their fertility
Fertility preservation techniques
Involve the freezing and storage of reproductive cells or tissue at very low temperatures, typically using cryoprotectants to prevent damage from ice crystal formation. The frozen cells or tissue can be stored for several years, maintaining their viability until they are needed.
Fertility preservation is particularly relevant for individuals facing circumstances that may compromise their fertility, such as cancer treatments (chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or surgery), certain medical conditions, gender transition, or other personal reasons. By preserving their reproductive cells or tissue, individuals can retain the option of using assisted reproductive technologies, such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) or intrauterine insemination (IUI), to achieve a pregnancy and have biological children in the future.

For Males
For males, sperm freezing is the most common method of preservation. It involves collecting a semen sample, which is then processed and frozen for later use. For females, options include oocyte (egg) freezing, where mature eggs are retrieved and frozen, or ovarian tissue freezing, where a portion of the ovary is removed and frozen. Oocyte freezing is currently the more established and widely used method for female fertility preservation.
